The world has always been full of rules. Some are there for our own good; some are just… laughable. For example, there is a law in Texas that says you cannot milk another person’s cow. Or, there is another one specific to Clarendon, Texas that says you cannot dust any public building with a feather duster.
There is an old proverb that states that “Rules are made to be broken.” To a certain extent, I would have to agree. There are a few rules that I do like to break. I will share with you my top five rules to break.
Playing in Public Fountains
First of all, why is it a general rule everywhere that you cannot play in public fountains? If you do, you will get yelled at by security, can be written a ticket, and possibly be arrested. My feeling is, if you are going to publicly display a big giant water fountain on a hot summer day, people should be allowed to play in it. It’s only rational.
Eat Your Dessert Last
I am not sure who made this rule, but I am sure it was someone’s mother. You have to eat all of your supper before you get dessert. I am not sure what the consequences would be unless you are five years old. But why is that fair? By the time I finish my supper, I don’t have room for dessert. Life is way too short not to occasionally eat dessert first.
Being Silly in Public
When you grow up, you are expected to just…well, grow up. You have to act a certain way and be polite and respectful. If you don’t adhere to the adult rules of conduct, you get seriously frowned upon and sometimes, you get a stern “talking to” on the behavior that is acceptable for grown-ups. Sometimes though, you just need to go rolling down hillside or go ride go-carts. Sometimes, adults need to go to the batting cages or play video games in the arcade and win a silly prize. Or maybe go to a carnival and eat funnel cakes and sno cones and rides the Tilt ‘O Whirl till your stomach is rolling.
In school and work, you are supposed to show up every day and do your work. You are not supposed to skip school or work for that matter. If you do skip school or work, you can get suspended or even fired. Some of us don’t get vacation days and sometimes you just have to make your own. I think every now and again, you just have to play hooky. Go take a break from reality and have a little fun. Yeah, you may have days off or weekends, but then you have so many things going on; soccer practice, lawns to mow, or even cleaning the house. So, take a day off when you’re not supposed to.
The Unjust I know my other rules may sound a little silly. And maybe they are. However, there are some rules that have got to be broken. If not, black people would not have the right to sit anywhere they want, women would still be considered property, and we would not have the right to fight for what we believe in. The consequences to most rules that are unjust are just as wring as the rules themselves; fines, jails, and sometimes even death. So sometimes, the rules are made to be broken.
Now, if you excuse me please… I have a cow to milk.
