Rafael Nadal has finally added the US Open trophy to his long list of accomplishments by beating Novak Djokovic in the finals yesterday 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. The US Open was the only major to elude the Spaniard.
Many felt that the Nadal would never win the Open because of the way he plays. His top spin heavy balls and loopy strokes on the hard, fast, windy courts of Flushing Meadows were considered anathema to his game. He proved many of the experts wrong by playing nearly two weeks of flawless tennis.
Nadal is the seventh man to complete the career Grand Slam (winning at least one title at all of the majors) and the victory is his third slam of the year. By winning the Australian Open in January he could complete a Rafa Slam (four majors in a row, not in the same calendar year). Rod Laver was the last person to complete such a feat.
Nadal must now be considered one of the all time greats. (And let’s not forget the guy is only 24 years old.)
