NASCAR’s race in Texas saw more than its usual amount of drama with two races left in the Chase. Drivers Jeff Burton and Jeff Gordon got into a post-wreck brawl after they climbed out of their cars, according to Yahoo! Sports. Jeff Gordon’s usually calm demeanor erupted when Jeff Burton crashed into him under caution. There wasn’t even any racing going on — Burton simply bashed into the back of Gordon and their race days were done when they came to rest against the wall. Yahoo! News reports Burton accidentally drove into Gordon as he was getting near him to talk about a previous incident a few turns earlier during the caution.
Gordon’s emotional display comes at a critical time for NASCAR racers as the season is almost over. Sometimes tempers flare and athletes get out of control. Here’s a look at three other brawls and how the combatants fared.
Worst Hockey Fight in History
This video on WebTVHub.com gets my nod as the most ridiculous fight in the history of the NHL. On April 6, 2006, the Montreal Canadians and Ottawa Senators faced off and, right after the first puck dropped, two players threw off their gloves ready to fight.
What happened next was insane. Not a single punch was thrown and both players got sent to the penalty box. The fight wasn’t bad because of its brutality, but because it was lame and pointless.
The Detroit Shock and Los Angeles Sparks were in a close game in 2008 with 4.5 seconds remaining and four points separating the teams. Candace Parker and another player got tangled up and the fists began to fly between both teams and coaches.
In all, four players were ejected because warnings had been issued earlier when tensions flared earlier in the game. You can watch the events unfold here on YouTube. Some players even get injured trying to break up the fight.
When two teammates fight in training camp and they are both on the same team, it’s never what you want when you are the head coach. In August 2006, LenDale White and Donnie Nickey mixed it up after a play was run.
As White returned to the huddle after a blown play, Nickey nudged him in the back with his helmet. A television crew caught the incident on camera, in a report filed by ESPN.com. Head coach Jeff Fisher said another incident like that wouldn’t happen again.
Remaining Races for Burton, Gordon
As the race for the Sprint Cup winds down, Jeff Gordon is in sixth place in the points race and likely will not win the title. Before the race in Texas, he was fourth. Jeff Burton is in 12th place; he was in 10th place, according to official NASCAR points standings.
In the overall scheme of this season, the wreck and fight probably won’t matter. It was a heated exchange between two tough drivers who were trying to win a race. Everyone knows both men are good racers, so this display of macho bravado in the heat of the moment doesn’t prove anything.
