Do you remember Natalie Portman from her earliest movie ” The Professional”? ( Well, if you don’t check it out for free on HULU.com)
She had the chops and good looks even at age 13— but now more than a decade later she may finally go into Oscar contention for her newest flick ” Black Swan”.
Directed by Darren Aronofsky( who also directed The Wrestler (2008), starring Micky Rourke), The Swan is a real thriler in the female horror zone like Basic Instinct which allows you to peek inside the crazy hormonal female frenzy of two girls competing against each other, plus watch a little ballet on the side.
I am anxious to see it as the trailer looked not so bad, and supporting cast includes Winona Rider, Barbara Hersey, and Milo Kunis. It got a great reception at the Venice Film Festival and next week it will debut at the Toronto Film Festival.
Portman, who studied baller in her childhood, went back and really tortured her body to do those” swanlike” moves a year in advance, so that alone should get her an Oscar nod.
This should do pretty good box office too as it lures girlfriends who coerce their boyfriends into watching two girls in a very close relationship if you know what I mean.
So it should attract the male 18-32 crowd as well as the date night crowd. Not so sure the family crowd will be there as this is not a” ballet” movie musical . The rating should be the first clue to mom and dad.
Here is a link from the LA times with a trailer for you.
