My first year after graduating from university, I worked in a kindergarten that had an infestation of head lice.Through mostly natural treatments, parents managed to rid their kids of the nasty critters after just a few weeks, but it wasn’t easy. As any mother knows, any child can be a head lice carrier and any child who spends time around other kids is at risk for head lice. That’s why every parent or caregiver should know how to get rid of head lice quickly, easily and safely. While some parents use chemical products from the pharmacy to kill head lice, this isn’t necessary and, if used incorrectly, can be harmful to the child. That’s why using a natural remedy to get rid of head lice is often the best way to go.
Vinegar – One of the best natural treatments for head lice is vinegar. Vinegar is one of those wonder products that does just about everything, and killing head lice is just one of the many things vinegar is effective against.Plus it’s cheap and easy to use.
After you shampoo your child’s (or your) hair, rinse out the shampoo then add a rinse of vinegar. Leave the vinegar in the hair and towel dry. The vinegary smell will evaporate in less than half an hour, yet you or your child will be left with soft, shiny hair, on its way to being lice free. Do this every day for three days, then every three days for around two weeks, as you need to not only deal with the nits themselves but the eggs they lay.
Mayonnaise – Massaging mayonnaise into your child’s or your hair can be an effective natural treatment for head lice. The mayonnaise is thick and oily and basically suffocates the head lice. I had head lice once when I was a child, and my mother used the mayonnaise trick, which worked like a dream.
Simply massage the mayonnaise into your child’s or your hair, wrap the hair in a towel and leave it on overnight. Wash it out in the morning, and repeat again for two more days, following up with treatments every three days for the next two weeks. Massaging mayonnaise into hair is not only a wonderful natural remedy for nits, but it also is a superb conditioner for your hair. You’ll find your hair is in better condition than it’s ever been in after a couple of weeks of mayonnaise treatments.
Head Lice Comb and Tweezers – Another natural way to get rid of head lice is using a special head lice comb and tweezers. Comb through the hair, making sure you get through every strand, and spending at least 30 minutes doing this. Then go through the hair again, particularly checking the scalp area, and repeat every day for at least a week.
Personally, I think this is the least effective natural way of getting rid of head lice, but some of the parents at my kindergarten swore by it.
Clean Bedding and Clothing – Don’t forget too, once you or your child have head lice, you must wash your sheets, pillowcases, any clothing you’ve been wearing, or any other item that may have touched your head with very hot, soapy water. This also includes combs, hair brushes and any hair styling items. If you don’t, every time you lie down or use a hair styling item, you’re putting yourself at risk for a new head lice infestation.
