This show was formerly called “NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service.” Some people probably wonder why the show’s name was abbreviated to “NCIS” – the descriptive title certainly packs a punch. Many people may not know that the U.S. Navy actually has a criminal investigative service to track crimes that happen within the Navy’s blue and white borders.
The show is a revelation, as it depicts so many aspects of a career, the naval vocation that most of us don’t think about. What it really opens our eyes about is the fact that crimes do take place even in the Navy and the Marines when most of us would think that people who are trained to defend our country probably stick to the straight and narrow. Well, think again.
The show has so many twists and turns that if you are the kind that gets bored with stable situations after a while; this is just the show for you. There’s crime, of course, but also morals (hey, it is the US Navy we’re talking about here after all!), conviction, honesty and being true to one’s self. The best part is that these values are not reflected in just one protagonist. It appears that all the characters of the show contribute these values and even as the bones rattle in their closets, we get to see what makes them worthy of our respect.
All those black and white stills that pop up in the middle can distract you but watch this show. The characters are well drawn and they all really complement each other. The show’s filled with secrets, schemes and truths half told, leaving you to guess at the rest. A bit frustrating, but you’ll be on edge never knowing who’s next in the line of fire.
The favorite, Special Agent Gibbs has many demons to face. Our sympathies to go him; we’ve all been there though we may not look as smart in uniform. One wonders – will he come to terms? Or will he compromise one fine day? Still, Gibbs has values and our chests puff up with pride when he stands up to them.
The “NCIS” show characters are a dream team. They lean on each other and they bounce back with each other’s help. This will appeal to a lot of you. And let’s face it – all those uniforms; it’s worth watching just to see that excellent tailoring!
