A bakery that cares so much about the quality of their ingredients that they personally know the folks who mill the flour they use? Yes it is possible. The makers, bakers and owners of the Arizmendi bakery and pizzeria on Valencia not only know the folks who mill their flour, all their ingredients are sourced from local organic growers. This, in my opinion, guarantees the freshest and healthiest foods. This bakery is the product of a 30 year old famous cooperative called the Cheese Board which was started in Berkley, Ca.
The bakery is worker-owned and run, which means that baked goods receive that extra special touch. The owners include owners include graduates of cooking schools and experienced chefs and bakers, social justice activists, musicians, actors, writers and visual artists. With such an eclectic variety of bakers you can imagine all of the possibilities of flavors and types of baked goods. They bake the traditional bakery spread such as scones and muffins and they also feature the tastiest sourdough pizza. There are different flavors of pizza for each day of the week as well as a weekly bread schedule.
The atmosphere has almost a behind the scenes feel to it with the stainless steel accents and minimalist look so this is not one of those bakery cafes in which you buy a cup of coffee and sit down. The focus is on the baked goods. The prices are very reasonable and the piece of mind provided by knowing the ingredients are organic is priceless. This bakery is located at 1208 Valencia St. and they are closed on Tuesdays.
