My husband is a big fan of Oriental food. Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Thai; it doesn’t matter. He loves it all. I, on the other hand, enjoy it in smaller doses. For that reason, I am rarely eager to make Oriental dishes on a regular basis.
To curb his appetite for all things Oriental, my husband likes to purchase some of their pre-packaged noodle soup mixes. One of his favorites comes from Nong Shim. It is their Neoguri Spicy Seafood Noodles.
These noodles come in a 4.2-oz package, which represents 2 servings. There are 240 calories in each serving.
Neoguri Spicy Seafood Noodles have 7 grams of fat per serving. Of that amount, 3 grams comes from saturated fat. This noodle mix contains no trans fat.
These noodles are very high in carbohydrates at 38 grams. They are also chock full of salt at 1040 milligrams. However, they contain less than 1 gram of sugar and no cholesterol.
On a positive note, Neoguri Spicy Seafood Noodles offer 5 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber. They also provide 6% of the daily-recommended amount of iron and 2% of the necessary calcium.
Ingredients include beef bone stock, beef consume, beef fat, carrots, corn flour, corn syrup, cottonseed oil, eggs, fish, fructose, garlic, ginger, glucose, green onion, milk, miscellaneous spices, modified potato starch, mushrooms, mussels, onion, palm oil, paprika, potato starch, salt, sea tangle, seaweed, shellfish, shrimp, soybean oil, soy protein, sugar, wheat, and yeast extract. It also contains arabic gum, citric acid, dextrin, dextrose, disodium guanylate, disodium inosinate, DL alanine, DL methionone, L cystine, monsodium glutamate, potassium carbonate, riboflavin, sodium carbonate, sodium phosphate, succinic acid, THQ, thiamine hydrocholoride and tocopherol.
Neoguri Spicy Seafood Noodles can be cooked on the stovetop on in a microwave. For microwaving, bring 2 cups of water to a boil in a microwave safe bowl.
Add the noodles and vegetable mix into the water and stir thoroughly. Microwave on high for an additional 5 minutes or until the noodles absorb most of the water. Remove the dish from the microwave and serve.
For stovetop preparation, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Then slowly add in Neoguri Spicy Seafood Noodles. Turn the heat down to low and continue cooking until most of the water is absorbed. Remove the noodles from the pan and serve as desired.
Here is my summary review:
Taste: 4 stars. Neoguri Spicy Seafood Noodles are very hot and spicy. They will make your eyes tear and open your nasal passages. My husband loves that about them but they are way too hot for my taste.
Preparation ease: 5 stars. These noodles are hard to mess up. Being able to microwave ot fix via stovetop allows for options, making preparation easy for all people of all ages. My son made something similar when he was just a boy.
Packaging: 4 stars. Neoguri Spicy Seafood Noodles come in a bright fuschia and orange package with yellow, black and red trim. Lettering is done in black and white. A picture of the noodle soup is provided on the package. While the packaging is a bit too overdone for my taste, it is colorful enough to draw attention and make the product easy to locate on the store shelf.
Freshness: 5 stars. We have never had a package of Neoguri Spicy Seafood Noodles go bad although it conceivably could occur. To ensure freshness; however, the company provides an expiration date printed on the side of each package. As long as it is observed, the meal should be fresh and tasty.
Dietary value: 3 stars. This product is marginal in fat content but very high in carb and sodium content. Luckily it provides little sugar and has no cholesterol. However, the small protein and fiber content is not enough to set aside the negative factors. This is not a meal I could eat on a regular basis.
Green value: 4 stars. The packaging is biodegradable.
Ease of purchase: 2 stars. Neoguri Spicy Seafood Noodles are not carried widely. It may take some time to find this product in mainstream grocery marts. On the other hand, it is a product that is likely available at some specialty shops as well as stores that carry a significant amount of Oriental foods.
Price: 4 stars. Neoguri Spicy Seafood Noodles is relatively inexpensive at less than $2 a package.
Product purchase probability: 3 stars. Luckily, my husband only indulges in this dish from time to time.
Retailer purchase probability: 5 stars. We bought ours at the commissary, which is the only place we buy it. It is less expensive there.
Final rating: 4.0 stars.
