Networking is about learning about other people, and letting them learn about you.
The Biggest Mistake
The biggest mistake people make when networking is making it all about themselves. You friend them, you give them business, and they do not return the favor.
This happened to me once, and the person called me a month later asking for another favor (and more business). I know she wasn’t promoting my business, and I knew she would never use my business.
She actually called a few other times, and I kindly told her I had no more business for her. Some people do not understand that networking is a two way street. If someone helps you with business, you are supposed to return the favor.
She was being selfish, and only focused on herself. She lost me as a connection, and she lost the business I was providing for her.
If someone is going around promoting your business, you should return the favor.
Some people network by giving you fake leads. They tell you how badly they want to use your business, and then never use your business.
I have seen it enough to know people do it on purpose. They are trying to fool you (and others) into thinking they provide business for the networking group. They proclaim in front of everyone in the group, how they will use your services, and then they never do.
It is just annoying. It is also obvious to everyone who sees it. Just do not do it.
