The Bravo cable network is launching a new reality competition TV series for singer/songwriters, set to debut in 2011.
“Going Platinum” will follow the same pattern as other past Bravo reality contest shows, such as “Project Runway”, “Top Chef”, “Shear Genius”, and “Top Design”. 12 competitors will live together and face each other in various challenges, with the winner to receive $100,000. The champ will also receive a publishing deal with Sony/BMI songwriting team The Writing Camp; and a recording deal with the RCA/Jive label. Each episode will feature a different theme in which the competitors will write and perform lyrics from various musical genres. Unlike “American Idol”, the audience does not vote for who stays or leaves the show.
Ex-“American Idol” judge Kara DioGuardi will be “Going Platinum”‘s head judge. DioGuardi appeared on “Idol” for two seasons, before leaving the show last month. Her songwriting credits include Christina Aguilera’s “Ain’t No Other Man”, Kelly Clarkson’s “Walk Away”, and Ashlee Simpson’s “Pieces of Me”. With Bug Music, she also co-owns a music publishing company,Arthouse Entertainment.
“Hit songs are the backbone of the music industry, and as a publisher, nothing excites me more than finding new songwriting talent,” DioGuardi said. “I am happy to be a part of a show that helps up and coming songwriters pursue their dreams, while giving the public a look into the creative process.”
Three time Grammy nominee Jewel will host the program. She’ll also mentor the competitors, similar to the role Tim Gunn plays on “Project Runway”.During 2007 and 2008, she was both emcee and judge for USA Network/NBC’s “Nashville Star” talent show.
The ten episode “Going Platinum” will be produced by True Entertainment, and filmed in Los Angeles. It would not be surprising to see stars from Bravo shows like “The Real Housewives” guest on “Going Platinum”. Atlanta “Housewife” Kandi Burruss co-wrote TLC’s hit, “No Scrubs”, and is often seen performing on the show. She was featured in several “Real Housewives of Atlanta” episodes working with cast mate Kim Zolciak to record a dance track, “Don’t Be Tardy for the Party”. Burruss would make a good “Going Platinum” judge, at least. On the other hand, perhaps the “Going Platinum” competitors can pen a follow up single to “Money Can’t Buy You Class” from “New York Housewife” Countess LuAnn DeLesseps.
