Yesterday it was announced that Twitter founder and CEO, Evan Williams, would be stepping down from his big-name position and Dick Costolo would be taking over.
Who is this Dick Costolo, you might ask yourself? Well, he has actually worked for a year, starting in September 2009. He worked in the Business Strategies department previous to obtaining this new promotion. Funny thing about Dick? His first tweet after starting his work at Twitter was: “Task #1: undermine CEO, consolidate power.” Humorous, don’t we think?
Another thing about Dick? He went to school at University of Michigan, so that makes him a Wolverine, and in turn makes him awesome. He is also the founder of Feedburner, an RSS reader that was purchased by Google in 2007. During his first year at Twitter, Dick was the man who came up with the concept of “Promoted Tweets”. If you looking at the trending topics area on Twitter, those are the ones that have “Promoted” highlighted next to them. How much does a Promoted Tweet cost your company? $100,000.00. So I am sure that they want to keep this guy around, he has the potential to make them lots of money.
And what about Evan? Well, apparently he isn’t going anywhere. He is going to stay with Twitter and work in Product Strategy. And according to this Fast Company article – www.fastcompany.com/1692987/twitter-hat-changes-coo-now-ceo-ev-focusing-on-strategy – he has great things to say about the new CEO who started off his career with the hopes to undermine Mr. Williams himself: “Costolo has been a “critical leader in devising and executing our revenue efforts, while simultaneously and effectively making the trains run on time in the office” during his year in the COO role.” Hopefully Twitter stays on the road to success and there aren’t any bumps in the way.
Have a good week!
