The Ferndale City Counsel has adopted an ordinance, called “Complete Streets,” which will increase safety and accessibility for residents to get around town on bicycles or on foot. Apparently, a significant proportion of trips made by Ferndale residents, especially those living near the downtown area, are under one mile. The new ordinance will make it easier for those trips to be taken without a vehicle.
The ordinance will force the different departments in the city that somehow influence traffic and streets to work together in making them safer for bicyclists and pedestrians. This plan was put into motion back in the late 1990’s, but just now has actually been put into law. The City Counsel sent a message in passing the ordinance; they encourage residents to live healthy lifestyles.
It will be interesting to see what changes are made over the next year or so in light of the City Counsel’s decision.
