We’ve all heard bad cover songs and bad cover bands, but a new video going viral on YouTube may just feature the worst cover band ever. Posted on November 28, 2010, the video “Worst Band Ever Butchers Pink Floyd” has already received almost 170,000 views and is spreading like wildfire around the internet. The video shows an as-of-yet-unnamed band performing a cover of Pink Floyd’s legendary anthem “Comfortably Numb” from the album The Wall. The video was reportedly recorded outside of a music store in Augusta, Georgia during a breast cancer awareness performance.
It is almost impossible to put into words how painfully bad this band’s version of “Comfortably Numb” truly is. They never seem to have rehearsed playing the song together before – indeed, it often sounds as though each band member is playing a different song entirely! The singer, if he can be called as much, is the only one who seems to know the song, even if he has no sense of its melody and timing. At least he tried to add his own echo to parts like the opening “Hello (hello, hello)” and put some kind of emotion, occasionally, into it. The same cannot be said for any of the other band members, including the bassist who is always a half-beat behind, and the drummer who can never find the beat at all. But most painful of all is the guitarist’s woeful attempt to play David Gilmour’s famous solo 2 minutes into the performance. We should all be thankful he did not even try to perform the even longer solo at the end of the song.
The comments which have been pouring in about the video are perhaps even more hilarious than the video itself. “I feel uncomfortably dumb after watching this,” said one YouTube user; “I heard they were using this in Gitmo to get answers,” commented another. Some of the most painful insults include: “The surviving members of Floyd just killed themselves so they could spin in their graves” and “It appears that they’re singing to those two pumpkins in front of the stage. Pity the pumpkins. If they had legs, they would have run away.” For some, however, the performance is not entirely awful. As one less critical commenter observed: “Hey….at least it’s not Lady Gaga!”
Remix and response videos are sure to follow quickly as the video continues to go viral. Already there is one remix blending the performance in with clips from The Wall movie. News of the video is only beginning to hit Pink Floyd fan forums such as the Echoes mailing list, so it may be time to break out the popcorn, sit back and watch the reactions continue to pour in.
Perhaps if the video becomes popular enough, this band could even get themselves a special guest appearance at one of Roger Waters’ current The Wall Live shows. Although, to be honest, Waters response to them might not be so amusing. To quote another song from The Wall, I imagine his reaction might be to say:
“If I had my way, I’d have all of you shot!”
