New York Yankees fans harassed Cliff Lee’s wife while she was watching the ALCS from the stands, and now the best free agent pitcher on the market this offseason may have a reason not to sign with the Yankees. According to ESPN, fans were less than kind to Kristen Lee as she sat in the visiting family section at Yankee Stadium. Fans reportedly spit and threw beer in her direction, in addition to shouting obscenities at her. It’s pretty low class behavior to say the least, and these are the type of fans who find enjoyment from ruining the game experience for other people.
Maybe these Yankees fans were just upset that Cliff Lee was making their team look like a bunch of Little League players up there during Game 3 of the ALCS. Lee absolutely dominated the Yankees, beating them 8-0 and striking out 13 hitters. Maybe that made these particular fans feel pretty inadequate about themselves, and the only thing that their limited intelligence would let them do is lash out at a woman sitting in the stands. This behavior isn’t tolerated in most parts of the country, but when it comes to Yankees fans, it seems some of them are intent on ruining it for others.
Now the big question is going to be whether these fans ruined the chances the Yankees had of signing Cliff Lee in the offseason. Lee is about to become the biggest “fish” on the market, as he and Carl Crawford are the only two superstars who will be available. It seemed like the Yankees had the best chance to go after Lee, especially because they have his good friend CC Sabathia already on the roster. The two became quite close when they were pitching for the Cleveland Indians, and even their wives are friends with each other. That is a huge bargaining chip when entering negotiations, but these latest incidents might be harder to overcome.
The Yankees could really attract Lee if they made an example of those fans. Check video footage, talk to witnesses, and offer rewards for anyone willing to turn in the people who harassed Kristen Lee. Find out who those people were and first file charges against them, and then ban them for life from Yankees Stadium. That type of behavior shouldn’t be tolerated in any situation, and it would be nice to see the Yankees take a stand against it. These aren’t the only hooligans out there in baseball stadiums, but fans like this aren’t really true fans at all.
