Although it is not always the case, in general, it seems like news racks are left in our neighborhood and abandoned. Often, there are not any publications inside. They simply sit on the corner and rot. If there are any publications in sight, they are damaged and no one wants to use them.
Now, the Board of Supervisors will work to resolve these street corner eyesores. The problem is very bad in Noe Valley. Neighbors who oppose the condition of news racks will be glad to know that updated terms in Public Works Codes indicate quick administration of fines for violations.
Currently, any news racks can be placed anywhere because it is based on a first come / first serve basis. Except under certain circumstances, the costs to place a newsstand is now $50. This is a $10.00 reduction from previous years. This is great for news agencies but bad for residents.
According to the new laws, a business will have five days to remove abandoned newsracks before fines are imposed. Call the Department of Public Works if you have noticed any violations near your residence.
