Brett Favre is a popular football player. He is Number 20 on the NFL Network’s “Top 100.” However, he was chosen number six by the fans. A couple of years ago, I would have ranked him higher, but he has really stayed in the game too long, placing his needs above the team in my opinion. I certainly would not place him sixth at this point.
Brett Favre was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons out of Southern Mississippi in 1991. I was aware of him because he ended up with the Green Bay Packers, who are sworn enemies of my Chicago Bears. So far he has played 19 seasons and 289 games. He has passed for 69,329 yards and 497 touchdowns; these stats are only going to increase.
Favre has an incredible arm. In fact, some receivers have talked about their fingers becoming broken just catching a pass from him.
While Favre will no doubt enter the Hall of Fame, he doesn’t seem to be able to give up the limelight. Further, every preseason has become a soap opera as to whether he is going to return to play or not.
Favre led the Packers to the win in Super Bowl XXXI against the New England Patriots.
Brett Favre’s style at the position of quarterback is as a controlled scrambler most of the time. He has no problem leaving the pocket and he has no problem running the ball. In fact, he doesn’t always slide as he should. In other words, Brett Favre plays all-out to win. Unfortunately, one thing that has haunted Favre is that he will sometimes make ill-advised throws and throw an interception or leave himself open to the big hit and fumble.
Favre has played though many tragedies, including the death of his father and his wife’s battle with breast cancer. After his dad died, he put in a four-touchdown first-half performance against the Oakland Raiders.
The Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears go way back as far as a rivalry. Favre has played a major role in the recent success of the Packers in owning the NFC North Division to a large degree.
Favre was a league MVP for three straight years. He retired in 2008 only to come back with the New York Jets and later joined another rival of the Packers, the Minnesota Vikings, which is where he is now. He has been a Pro-Bowler 11 times.
As I write this, Favre is struggling with a Minnesota team that has only won two games this year. Favre has just suffered an injury.
As I said, Brett Favre is a great player and he will be in the Hall of Fame. However, right now he needs to make room for new blood and engage in a well-deserved retirement.
