The NFL picks Week 4 seem to have a consensus in most games. This week, teams like the Falcons, Jets, Packers, Titans, Saints, Texans, Colts, Eagles and Chargers are decided favorites among the experts. However, in most big games thus far this season, the experts have been proven wrong. If that wasn’t the case, then the Steelers, Chiefs and Bears wouldn’t be the only 3-0 teams left. Therefore, the Week 4 NFL picks may need to focus on who is more likely to pull an upset.
The experts on ESPN have consensus picks in nine out of the 14 games on this latest docket. The only matchups they are split on are the Ravens-Steelers, Bears-Giants and Patriots-Dolphins. Even though the Eagles and Redskins battle is the most hyped of the day, they all believe that Philadelphia will come out ahead.
Making the picks for Week 4 would therefore appear to be easy, except for a few clashes. However, September was filled with surprises, so October may start no differently. It’s just a matter of predicting who might have the best shot at an upset.
The Falcons could be in a trap game after their upset against the Saints, as the 49ers are trying to save their season. As for the Saints, they appear to have it easy against the Panthers, but they haven’t had an easy win yet. The Bengals are up to 2-1 and are facing the Browns, yet Cincinnati’s offense is off to a slow start.
One of the easiest picks in Week 4 is the Jets over the Bills, but the Jets could also be caught in a trap after two big wins, and with major games ahead. The Packers look set to dominate the Lions, yet if they get double digits in penalties again, it might be harder.
As for the biggest game of the day, most of the picks favor the Eagles over Donovan McNabb, given the opposite directions for both. However, McNabb’s return to Philadelphia could go either way, especially if Michael Vick finally starts to struggle.
After their deflating loss to Dallas, Houston appears to have an easy route back against Oakland. But if the Texans really are ready to take the next steps, they will beat the teams they’re supposed to, and rebound from tough losses. For now, they are still in doubt on both counts.
One of the oddest trends in the picks is that the struggling, bumbling Giants are considered to have a good chance against the 3-0 Bears. Yet since the Giants are at home, and the Bears have not won over that many people, a New York win won’t be considered an upset.
That is just one of the anomalies on display this season, and despite the safe NFL picks, more surprises are likely on the way today.
