After waiting 15 years to return to the postseason, the Cincinnati Reds were eliminated in three games as the Philadelphia Phillies completed the sweep with a 2-0 victory Sunday evening.
Philadelphia starter Cole Hamels threw a five-hit complete game shutout, getting a double play after the leadoff hitter reached base in the top of the ninth.
Six Phillies contributed hits, including two-hit performances by Ryan Howard and Carlos Ruiz.
Cincinnati starter Johnny Cueto allowed only one unearned run in five innings, but the Reds offense continued to struggle, producing only one extra base hit.
The Phillies advance to the National League Championship Series to face the winner of the Braves/Giants series. Game 1 of the NLCS will take place Saturday, October 16.
