You’ve seen them on tv, haven’t you? Those organizers that allow you to change your purse in seconds. Instead of having to sort through the old purse, and position everything in the new one, you just grab the organizer out of one purse and drop it into another. They’re not cheap. Some people who sew have the luxury of being able to make the purse organizers themselves, but for people who don’t sew, it’s the high price tag for you! Not! Use one cheap craft product and you’ll be able to make the perfect purse organizer yourself!
Craft foam is just what you need to make the purse organizer of your dreams. Since you’ll be making it yourself you can make it the way you want rather than settling for the ones that are available. Craft foam is sold by the sheet or by the pack, comes in a huge assortment of colors, and is really, really cheap. Perfect!
Cut a strip of the foam to be as wide as the purse is tall – almost. When you stand the foam beside the purse it should be a little shorter than the purse itself. Cut the length of the foam so that it’s long enough to turn into a circle, and so that the circle fits well into the purse. The circle should not be larger than the purse but shouldn’t be much smaller than the purse, either.
To make the storage areas inside the purse organizer you’ll need to make foam cups. Cut a piece of foam to be as tall as the organizer, maybe a tad shorter, and glue the foam strip so that it forms a circle. The circle should be about as big around as a 20oz soda bottle. Set the circle on another piece of foam and glue it in place. When the glue is dry trim the bottom foam piece to be even with the circular strip. Now cut this in half, starting at the top edge, going down one side, across the bottom, then back up the opposite side. Glue each half, side-by-side, onto the main organizer piece. Make several of these small containers, in various sizes, cut them in half and glue them to each side of the main organizer piece. Make small, half-tubes for lipsticks and such; larger ones to hold cell phones and more.
Glue the two ends of the main organizer piece together and allow to set or dry. Lay out a matching piece of flat foam and apply glue to one side of the circle. Position the circle onto the new piece of foam, but as you do, squeeze the circle to create an oval shape. Hold this position until the glue dries. It can be helpful to form the circle, wrap tape or string around it to create the oval shape, apply the glue, then set it on the new piece of foam. After the glue is dry trim the bottom foam piece to fit the oval.
The finished design is an oval shaped carrier with compartments all the way around on the inside, and all the way around on the outside. Now all you have to do is lift it out of the old purse and drop it into the new. It makes life so much easier!
