For bikers sick of combating traffic on Market between 17th Street and Octavia, prepare to be happy: Bike lanes on both sides of the road have been approved by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA).
The big issue, though, is the removal of 15 parking spaces necessary to make room for the bike lanes. Thirteen of these spaces will be put back, but they’ll be a little bit shorter and at a different angle. Figuring out where to put the remaining two spaces is still under discussion by residents, Noe Valley merchants, the SFMTA and supervisors: The proposed sites of these spaces are tricky intersections in Noe Valley.
Though the new bike lanes have been approved, the plan will not go forward until the issue of the parking spaces is resolved.
