My wife and I finally got a chance to watch a movie together without the kids this past Saturday. Since I had some doubts about our ability to stay awake long enough to watch one, I ended up looking for a B-rated film that would hopefully be entertaining but not necessarily something we would try to force ourselves to watch if we got too tired. After searching our Netflix Instant Watch selection, I ended up with the movie Drive Thru.
When I read the description of the movie, which stars Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester; I really did think it fit what I was looking for perfectly. After all, how many movies have teenagers being hunted down by Horny the Clown; the mascot for a popular fast food restaurant? However, as we began watching it, I quickly discovered this movie was actually much better than I thought it would be; and that’s not just because it was one very creepy looking clown.
There was a lot of unnecessary swearing and drug use (as is usually the case with most of these movies). But, overall, the plot wasn’t terrible. I think the reason for this is, even though I was able to guess at who was wearing the costume, the film does a great job of keeping the motive behind the slayings a secret and only reveals bits and pieces until the very end.
Of course, I should warn you ahead of time that, once the reasons are revealed, this movie will remind you a lot of another, more famous movie. In fact, I won’t tell you which one because the similarities are almost identical to the point it would likely give away the ending.
Final opinion: It’s not a movie you are going to want to watch with the kids in the room; especially with some of the language and some gory scenes. However, it is a movie that is worth watching if you are looking for a film that might not necessarily scare you but will entertain you.
