I didn’t really have a whole lot of plans last night and made the decision to watch a movie. Since Halloween is Sunday, I picked out one that seemed to fit the theme perfectly, The Pumpkin Karver.
To tell you the truth, I wasn’t expecting the movie to be anything great. But, the plot sounded fantastic. Basically, it is about two siblings that are involved in a major Halloween tragedy (her boyfriend dresses up and tries to scare her and, believing she really is in danger, her brother ends up killing him) and, a year later, try to start their lives over in a new town; something that includes them attending a Halloween party. The only problem is, someone wearing the same pumpkin mask costume her boyfriend was wearing the night he died appears and starts slaughtering the party guests.
I will give the movie this much, the costume the bad guy was wearing really was creepy; along with the old man that kept appearing and muttering some garbage about good pumpkin carvers and evil pumpkin carvers.
However, other than those two things, this movie really wasn’t all that great.
First of all, the whole killing partying teens has been done to death (sorry about the pun) and the plot was so predictable, it was pretty easy to guess at the next victim. Not to mention the movie had the same cliché characters ranging from the slutty girl to the jerk ex-boyfriend.
Also, as far as parties go, I do have to say the one they were attending was one of the most organized drunken parties that I’ve seen. One moment they are dancing to a live band then they next they are participating in some sort of contest (that one where they eat live bugs was just weird) that conveniently leads to one or more of them wandering off; making it easy for them to be killed.
The worst part, for me, was the ending. It’s really not hard to figure out who the killer is. But, I honestly got pretty confused about whether he did it because he was insane, possessed or some other reason. I think it had something to do with that old man’s confusing rants, but I’m really not sure.
Final Opinion: The title might make this sound like a good choice for Halloween. But, if you are looking to be scared rather than confused, you might want to look for a different film.
