Growing up in New York I was lucky enough to be able to attend this fabulous celebration of the arts. For fourteen years now the New York Fringe Festival has been something for me and the thousands (over 75,000 to be exact); of other patrons to look forward to. I have attended every one, however the Fringe Festival in 2002 will always hold a special place in my heart. It was Post 9/11 and there was a sense of togetherness and reflection. I also got to see a live version of Kafka’s, “Metamorphosis”. I made so many new friends that week from around the world and I vowed to never miss the New York Fringe Festival.
I have currently planted myself in Nashville. There was no way I was going to miss the exhilarating buzz of this magnificent joyous diversion. I booked my flight to New York back in April to make sure I would be there for August.
What Exactly is The New York Fringe Festival
The New York Fringe Festival is where artists, filmmakers, dancers singers and production companies come to showcase their new works. It takes place in the most delicious parts of downtown Manhattan; the Lower East Side, The East Village and Greenwich Village. Thousands of people from all over the globe audition, only a little over 200 are selected. I was lucky enough to see a funny little play called Urinetown at the 2001 festival. Urinetown went on to become a Broadway show and won Tony Awards for best musical, best actor and best actress.
How to Purchase Tickets
The fastest easiest way is to simply order online. You can look through all the different types of shows and performances and decide right there what you would like to see. A great highlight you should sign up for is the New York Fringe Festival Mailing list. Even if you missed it this time around you can go ahead and give your email and be alerted by any special offers or info for the next one. I purchased my tickets on line for the show 3boys after reading an insanely funny yet twisted synopsis of the 40 minute play, starring Matt Brown. After the Fringe Festival 3 Boys has been receiving heavy critical acclaim.
Special Programs and Freebies
Take advantage of the “fringe” benefits by participating in their special programs. FringeJR is designed just for families. These specific performances are recommended for families and groups of kids ages five – twelve. Tickets for FringeJR are always just $10. FringeCLUB is something I particularly enjoyed this last time. It is a gathering after all the shows are over where you go and mingle with artists and the public. I met some pretty colorful people. The absolute best feature is the FringeAL Fresco. It is an absolutely free attraction held outdoors. There are teasers and music and I actually caught a glimpse of Ed Burns enjoying the festivities.
How To Audition
If you feel like your work or organization will benefit the festival let them know. If you are insanely passionate about your art you should apply. Remember thousands enter but if your cover letter can speak to the panel of judges you may just be a part of the 2011 New York City Fringe Festival. Applications will be available in December 2010.
If you have a bucket list immediately put The New York City Film Festival at the top of it; it truly is an experience of a lifetime.
