PS 38 in Boerum Hill sits “between housing projects and seven figure Brownstones,” making for a diverse population of students as well as a unique bouquet of issues.
It is also an under utilized school, meaning it has only half the students it could actually accommodate, which of course has its benefits as well as draw backs. PS 38 has been in transition in recent years, and so it is not terribly surprising that it scored a relatively low over all grade of C.
The school has many positive qualities which are obviously not reflected in the letter grade, and so parents need to look at this report card within the larger context. However, that context also includes the fact that PS 38 got an overall grade of A for the previous 2008-9 school year, and a D for the year before that.
It would seem that PS 38 is still in transition.
