The last time New York completely updated its voting machines, Eisenhower was President of the United States. However, after years of delay, the new optical scanner voting machines will be rolled out for the September 14th primary. There is massive skepticism that the Empire State residents will be able to use the highfalutin technology found in the new system. In the new voting system, New Yorkers will be require to use a pen, a piece of paper, a folder and a ballot-sized ATM machine. In order to ease the complication of the new voting machines, the New York Board of Elections has set up demos all around the city.
The change was mandated after the ‘hanging chad’ debacle of the 2000 Presidential election. In that debacle, after 18 months of campaigning, American democracy was found to be too insignificant to command a run-off election.
