On Saturday, September 25, 2010 local sheriff department substations will participate in Operation Take Back. Operation Take Back is a measure to collect out-dated and unused prescription drugs and safely dispose of them. Oakland County law enforcement is participating with the nation-wide Operation Take Back. Oakland County residents are encouraged to gather any out-dated or unused prescription medication, remove prescription information labels (with Rx number, pharmacy, dosage and personal information) and bring the leftover prescription medication to a local sheriff substation. The prescription should be left in its original packaging. Oakland County Sheriffs are not publicizing the event, but medication disposal bins will be placed in substation lobbies between 10 am and 2 pm. Initiatives like Operation Take Back benefit the community in several ways. Many people flush unused medications down the toilet. This puts toxic chemicals into the local water sources, polluting the environment and contaminating drinking water. Operation Take Back also attempts to prevent medication from getting into the wrong hands.
