Love creating a retro look for your bedroom or other area of your home? Well, nothing says “retro” like a vinyl record album! Do something unique and different with that album that has nothing to do with music. Make it into an unusual earring and jewelry holder that will fit right in to your retro décor scheme.
Obviously, you don’t want to damage an album that might be worth a lot of money. However, an old album that has no value like that is perfect for making a jewelry hanger that hangs on a wall or stands on a shelf. In fact, you can use a full size album to make a large jewelry organizer or a smaller record to make a earring holder for a young girl.
Start by laying a piece of thick cardboard on a flat surface. This will protect the surface as you create the earring holder. Lay the album on the cardboard and begin making holes in it to accommodate the earrings. Hold a pair of pliers with a pot holder then hold a nail with the pliers. Heat the nail and use it to poke holes, in sets of two, all over the album. It can be helpful to draw lines on the album with chalk before poking holes. That way, the sets of holes stay well-aligned.
If you want to hang more than earrings on the album create a hole for each hook you want to add. Position a push-pin in each hole and secure it on the backside. To do this, wrap a piece of tape around it, push a pencil eraser onto it or even glue on a small bead. Another way to hang assorted jewelry pieces on the album is to use peel-n-stick hooks. They take away from the retro look, though, so this is a personal choice.
To hang the jewelry organizer you can use one of several methods. Double-sided tape works to hang the lightweight album on a wall but you have to create short stacks of the tape to allow room between the record and the wall. This only works for wire earrings. With posts, you must reach behind the album to secure the backing to the earring. You can make a version that allows this by simply making two additional holes in the top of the album. Use this to thead a ribbon through and hang it on nail or tack.
Create a standing version of the earring holder by using two pieces of thick wood. The blocks of wood should be the same size. Paint them or use them as-is. Glue the two blocks together so that they trap the lower portion of the album between them.
No matter what type of album organizer you make you’ll see it’s very useful. Even if you don’t have a retro theme going on the album is an unusual piece you’ll be glad to show off to your friends and family! Watch who you show it off to, though. Soon she’ll be showing her new album organizer to you!
