HDTV’s we all love them, we all want them, we all especially want the latest and greatest technology available, which is why this news is a little sad. OLED (organic light emitting diodes) Panels have been put on the back burner indefinitely.
This really is a sad day for the world of television technology. OLED panels were set to revolutionize televisions, with super crisp pictures and incredibly detailed life like colors; the panels used in this technology were years ahead of both LCD and Plasma display technologies. OLED panels were light weight, and flexible, they offered far superior viewing angles and brightness compared to Plasma and LCD they use less power and were far more efficient and they had a performance increase of epic proportions when it came to response time, so what happened?
Sony Said the reason they have made this decision is because OLED Research and Development is far too costly for them to even consider it being a good return on investment for them. High production costs would also mean high street prices for this technology would have been out of reach to the masses, with an 11″ version to cost $11,000 at retail. Instead Sony will be focusing more on improving LCD, Plasma and 3DTV technology, all of the other major manufacturers(Samsung, Toshiba, LG and Panasonic) that were developing OLED are also following Sony’s lead.
In my honest opinion, I would have preferred Sony and the other leading manufacturers to keep the development of OLED alive rather than go down the road to 3DTV. I was fortunate enough to see the 11″ OLED on display and I can honestly say, it was the most beautiful television I have ever seen; the picture quality was absolutely breathtaking. Current HDTV’s produce incredible images and they are a true marvel of the technology world, but, if you think you have seen HD you are wrong, unless you saw it on their OLED display. I said before, this is a sad day as OLED panels would have revolutionized televisions. Maybe they will pick up developing this technology down the road; I for one sure hope so.
