If imitation is the best form of flattery, then the Union/Liberal “One Nation” rally attempted to flatter Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin by occurring on the Washington Mall last Saturday. There were, however, significant differences.
One very glaring difference was the amount of trash the two rallies left behind on the Mall. The Glenn Beck-inspired “Rally to Restore Honor” left the Washington Mall immaculate, indeed by some accounts improving it. The “One Nation” rally, on the other hand, left the Mall a landfill.
According to The Daily Caller:
“Fast food remnants littered the area below the Memorial. Empty water bottles were omnipresent as were discarded stick-mounted signs. The limited park-provided trash bins were almost works of art. The trashcan heaps bursting upwards looked like images of volcanoes caught mid-eruption, to say nothing of the areas surrounding the bins. Pompeii never had a chance.
“Perhaps the biggest problem was the pamphleteering. With well over a hundred groups passing out buttons, sign-up sheets, newspapers, pamphlets, flyers, rants and manifestos, it should come as no surprise that a lot of the printed material became sidewalk graffiti.”
This was despite the fact that there were far more people at the “Restoring Honor Rally” than there were at the “One Nation Rally.” One suspects that the contrast had to with the character of the two distinct groups of people who attended each rally.
The attendees of the “Restoring Honor Rally” were for the most part older, middle-class people who had been inculcated with the notion of leaving a public area as clean, if not cleaner, than one found it. They have taken the public service announcements that inveigh against trashing public parks or roadsides. The “Restoring Honor Rally” people are the sort of people who cut their lawns regularly, wash their cars, and vacuum their rugs.
Indeed, there was a joke that suggested that if the word had gone out that one of the requirements of attending the “Restoring Honor Rally” was that the grass had to be mowed, many of the attendees would have brought lawn mowers for that purpose.
Contrast that with the attendees of the “One Nation Rally” — union members who cling to work rules to keep from doing more than is absolutely necessary, entitlement-addled college students, angry “progressive” activists, and, ironically, environmentalists. Indeed, the Sierra Club was one of the sponsors of the “One America” rally, which was not very good for the environment. One wonders what the carbon footprint was to bus all of those protesters to Washington to hoot and holler and listen to the edifying oratory of the likes of Al Sharpton?
The trashing of the Washington Mall was, indeed, a fitting metaphor for the trashing of the country committed by the attendees. But come November, the cleanup crew will at last be summoned to deal with the mess.
