Oporto is the second largest city in Portugal after the capital Lisbon and the Houston wine bar and tapas gets the name from there and has a Portuguese theme to it with plenty of choices of wine and different tapas or small dishes to choose from and it was voted from the Houston Press as the best tapas in 2007.
The wine bar is very small and intimate there are a few tables and the bar area and it does tend to get crowded on the weekends and after work hours. The place is located at 3833 Richmond near the Edwards Theatre is and their hours of operations are Monday through Wednesday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m., Saturday and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. During the week they have special nights like on Monday is martini and Panini night for $10, or Wednesday is carne and vinho night which includes a pepper steak and a glass of Portuguese wine for $19 or even the Portuguese Paella and Sangria night on Sunday starting at 6 p.m.
They have over fifty choices of drinks where you can choose a glass or bottle of wine (from all over the world) or try a mojito, sangria, capirinha, martinis if you prefer a mixed drink. And as far as their tapas go, you can choose from the menu of the day which changes or go with one of their regular tapas.
Some of the food that you can choose from are the crab and avocado crostini which is lump crab meat served over grilled bread and topped with green herb aioli and avocado for $9, or the Oportobello which are marinated Portobello mushroom baked with a spinach and artichoke gratin for $10, or even the salmon ahumado which is thinly sliced and comes served with arugula greens, pears, capers, and tomato Dijon dressing for $9. Or you can share with your party one of their meat and cheese plates and mix and match them; some of their meat choices include chorizo, prosciutto San Daniele, coppa or even smoked salmon and for their cheeses you can choose from the pata cabra from Spain, the Sao Jorge sharp from Portugal, Taleggio from Italy or the Toledo from Portugal to name some of them.
Oporto wine and tapas bar is great with a small group of friends but can also be excellent for a date.
