Those beautiful poinsettias! They add the finishing touch to most any Christmas decorating scheme. Whether you set out real poinsettias, or go for convincing silk versions, the red and green shades of the plants add a punch of Christmas color in any setting. You can use one poinsettia to decorate in several different areas of the house when you trim it down to smaller sizes. Where will you find vases or containers for all of them? Go to your ornament box and you’ll find all the vases you need!
There are many different vases and planters you can create depending upon the materials you use, the colors you select, and the embellishments you add. Start with a Styrofoam cup or even a clay pot to make the base of the planter. Paint the chosen piece silver or gold – or another Christmas color. If you’re painting a Styrofoam cup be sure to use tempera paints which don’t melt Styrofoam like many paints can.
If you have no paint you can still make a poinsettia planter. Use a white ball ornament with a white Styrofoam cup. For the clay pot simply cut a large circle of fabric and set the pot in the center of it, on the wrong side of the material. Gather the fabric up around the pot and tuck the excess inside.
Choose the round ball ornament you want to use for the planter. You can create a solid look by painting the cup or pot gold and using a gold ball ornament. Or, choose an ornament that has a different design. The ornament you choose, though, should be round and have a top that can be removed.
Set the ornament on the clay pot or cup. The pot or cup must be small enough so that the ball doesn’t slide down to the bottom. At least two-thirds of the ornament should be outside the cup. Remove the top of the ornament and place a few pieces of a poinsettia inside. If the flower is real add a little water before setting it.
The ornament poinsettias look fabulous grouped together, in different size pots and cups, or sitting solo on a window ledge, porch railing, table, shelf or other area.
Christmas isn’t Christmas without poinsettias and now your one poinsettia can become many! Just make your own collection of the poinsettia planters and you can decorate the entire house with little investment or effort!
