I grew up in a very small town in upstate New York, where we had only one small, privately owned grocery store. Well, calling it a grocery store is a stretch, it was more of a market. But this market had one food that was a family favorite, and that was their cold sliced ham. The ham was a large, solid roast and the owner of the store would thinly slice it for us, charging us by the pound (much like the modern deli’s in our supermarkets).
I still remember how great that ham tasted, but I have finally found a lunch meat that rivals the flavor, and that product is Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Shaved Virginia Brand Ham. I have purchased Oscar Mayer ham slices before, but this is the first time I have tried their Virginia ham, and it does taste different, better I believe.
Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Shaved Virginia Ham comes in a rectangular shaped, clear plastic package, containing 9 ounces. This was on sale for only $3.00, which was cheaper per ounce than other lunch meats that I priced out. The package says that it is 97% fat free and that there are only 50 calories per serving, yes! This fits perfectly into my diet plans.
It has added water and is browned with caramel color and smoke flavoring is added. The slices are round and true to the claims, they are indeed sliced very thin, or as Oscar Mayer says, they are shaved. I love the taste of thinly sliced meats piled on a bread sandwich, and this is where my husband and I differ, he likes thick slices of meat. I think that the thin, shaved slices almost melt in your mouth.
There are six slices of Virginia ham in one serving, and that serving contains 1.5 grams of fat, zero grams of trans fat, and only 0.5 grams of saturated fat. There are 25 mg of cholesterol, 570 mg of sodium, less than 1 gram of carbohydrates, and a generous 9 grams of protein. It also provides 15% of the daily amount of vitamin C and 2% of the daily amount of iron.
Oscar Mayer foods are made by Kraft, and Kraft has a real winner with their Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Shaved Virginia Ham. It is very tender, and very flavorful. My only complaint about it is the fact that it does contain a lot of sodium. Sometimes when a label says a food has a lot of sodium it doesn’t taste salty to me, but that was not the case with this lunch meat, it really did taste a little too salty. One serving makes up almost one fourth of the daily amount of sodium. I would say you need to watch this if you are on a low sodium diet.
This is a lunch meat that I will be buying again and again. It truly does taste like deli style cold sliced ham.
