Thousands of people each day begin the process of a lifestyle change hoping desperately to lose weight and get healthy, only to give it up weeks later. Often you are left feeling like a failure, and wondering where it all went wrong. What you may not realize is that there is much more to it than just changing what you eat and exercising. You must first beat the dreaded diet mentality.
The first step is to accept responsibility for the actions that got you here in the first place. Realize that you made the choices that got you here, and that only you can make the choices that will get you to where you want to be.
Learn to conquer emotional eating. Everyone has fallen victim to emotional eating at some point in their life. People that are overweight often find that they fall victim to emotional eating more often than others. Once you recognize that you are doing it, you will have the power to learn to cope with these times of weakness, and eventually cut them out altogether.
Eliminate negative thinking. A bad attitude will foster feelings of self doubt. People that have a good attitude tend to be more successful in all areas of life, and weight loss is no exception. If you tell yourself, “I can’t do this,” then you can’t. Each positive step you take will help keep the self doubt monster away, so keep a list of your accomplishments (no matter how small) and post it where you can view it daily.
Don’t be afraid of change. Anything that pushes you out of your comfort zone can be scary. This can be especially relevant when it comes to letting go of the pounds that have been protecting you, and serving as your means of keeping people and pain away. Realize that you are a worthy and special person, and that embracing this change will simply make you a healthier worthy and special person.
Do not set unrealistic goals. I’m sorry, but there really is no quick fix. Those fifty pounds you gained over the course of the past year will not come off in a month’s time. While you might initially shed several pounds fast by going to extremes, these methods cannot be sustained, and you are setting yourself up to fail. By setting realistic goals, you will be able to reach them, and as you reach them your confidence will soar!
Accept that you will make mistakes. You will not flawlessly complete this journey, that is a given. There is a lot to be learned from mistakes if you pay attention. Analyze what factors came into play when you made the mistake. Learn what not to do, accept that the mistake is now a thing of the past, and move on.
You will be successful at any weight loss and exercise plan if you overcome the diet mentality before you begin, so start today and unlock the power of the new you!
