Manny Pacquiao was on top of his game Saturday night as he defeated Antonio Margarito in a 12 round decision to claim the WBC super-welterweight title, his eighth boxing title in his storied career. Pacman led from start to finish, his speed leaving Margarito waving. The new Filipino congressman and boxing champion collected a $15 million payday for the fight.
Pacquiao vs Margarito Round by Round Analysis
The first two rounds were pretty close. Manny landed more punches in both, but Margarito held his own. Probably scored 10-9 Pacquiao for both the first and second rounds.
Pacman starts to assert himself in the third round, landing more punches and with more authority. He has opened up a couple cuts on Margarito’s face already by the fourth, and it just gets worse in the fifth. 50-45 Pacquiao after five rounds.
The sixth was a tight round, Margarito landed several good shots but Manny always had an answer. The seventh was more Manny. Pacman is starting to land his classic four and five punch combos. Margarito is tough, very tough, but his eye is swollen and he can’t take many more to the face.
The eighth is another close round with Margarito chasing and pinning Pacquiao against the ropes a couple of times, but Pacman just takes a couple of body blows and then punches and spins his way out. Best round yet, Maybe a draw.
The ninth and tenth are a bit slower rounds. Manny knows he’s a winner with no mistakes but Margarito can’t catch him for more than a punch or two. The eleventh was brutal as Margarito’s eyes are swelling shut and Manny is landing punches at will. The 12th round would have been equally brutal but Pacquiao taking it a bit easy on Margarito.
Pacquiao wins by unanimous decision.
Wow. You can’t say too many good things about Manny Pacquiao. The man can box, and he put on a boxing clinic tonight on Antonio Margarito’s face. It is fair to say he is the best of his generation, and unless Floyd Mayweather steps up to prove otherwise that is what history is likely to say as well.
Pacquiao vs Mayweather Next?
Will the long-anticipated Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather fight finally materialize? That would be the fight of the century so far no argument so let’s hope both sides get together and pull it off. The clock is ticking. If not expect to see lightweight Juan Manuel Marquez move up to welterweight for another shot at Pacquiao.
