Success with Associated Content is all about page views. Yes of course there are upfront payments, but they are generally too small to make much of a monetary difference to most of us. Additionally, the response time is such that waiting for an offer when you’re writing about a current “hot topic” is self defeating. If something is trending NOW, why would I want to publish something about it NEXT WEEK? For example, when I published Ricky Martin Reveals that He is Gay it was breaking entertainment news that people were actively looking for and talking about. I received good page views on this one, but had I waited a week, that would not have been the case.
Furthermore, most people don’t expect to make a living exclusively publishing through Associated Content. While some people can make very good money writing for AC, most people see it more as a place to build name recognition and to get exposure. All the upfront payments in the world will not gain you exposure if you only receive a few page views. So what’s the secret to getting page views?
Well, there either isn’t one, or it’s a really good secret. The thing is page views remain kind of a mystery. There are topics that you can be sure, will get a lot of views, but sometimes what works and what doesn’t will surprise you. I’ve written articles that I was sure were just gold and received a handful of views for them; conversely, I’ve written articles that were just thrown together reworkings of college papers and other pieces I had no real hope for and found them to do surprisingly well.
When you are new to AC it is completely a learning process that involves trial and error to learn what works and what doesn’t. Hopefully some insight into my learning process may help those new to online writing to get an idea of how to achieve page view success. For myself, I’ve found reviews to be the most profitable. If you have a product review that is not an oversaturated topic, page views will poor in.
This is where it gets tricky because everyone else is trying to get in on this highly profitable area. If your article is one of 10,000 reviews of the same product, you won’t get a lot of hits. My biggest success on AC was my Body By Jake Tower 200 Review which has earned over 100,000 page views. The reason this one performed so well was because it was a product people were looking for information on, but no one else was reviewing it. I had the fortune of good timing to be the first one reviewing the tower 200.
Another lesson I learned here is that you cannot recreate previous success. If you have one big hit don’t try to copy it, but rather find out what made it special and try to find something else that is fresh and new. I tried similar types of product reviews The Ultimate Body Press Review, and the Iso7X Review neither of which came close to the page views of their predecessor, although the latter did receive over 1000 pvs, which is significantly better than some of my articles that are stuck in the double digits.
In addition to product reviews, I find that another great type of article for page views is a guide to different products on a specific theme; it’s kind of like the cousin of a “product review.” The Best Affordable Fragrances for Men gathered quite a few page views for me because it was a useful guide on a topic that is not over done. Another important note here, remember what I said earlier about not trying to copy a successful article and milk a topic? More Affordable Fragrances for Men has received a grand total of 78 page views.
As I’ve continued to learn and grow with associated content I’ve had page view success with numerous different styles, and subjects. I’ve written on everything from TV recaps to philosophy and religion to silly comedy pieces, and even the occasional drift into the short story and poetry genre. What is the biggest lesson I’ve learned about writing and page views? Don’t dismiss any ideas, and don’t try to fit into a box of what you “should be writing.” Be unconventional, and write on some of everything you can think of; be creative, and the page views may just surprise you.
