Pain can be from an injury, illness, or a serious condition and does not affect just a certain group of people. All humans are subjected to some kind of pain in their lives, but how it affects their lives depends on many emotional, neurological, and physiological factors. Pain can be controlled and sometimes even eliminated. There are many ways to beat pain and studies are done on a continual basis to find even more ways to control it.
Pain, whether acute or chronic is not a healthy state for anyone to be in. Most people who suffer from acute pain will normally say that the sharp and rapid occurrence of the pain usually does not last for a long period of time. However, people who suffer from chronic pain will suffer many more health problems as well.
Acute pain will normally cause anxiety and an increase in blood pressure. A person will sometimes be breathless, sweating, and have dilated pupils in more severe cases of acute pain. A person who is suffering from chronic pain will sometimes suffer from depression, poor appetite, weight loss, loss of interest in activities, poor sleep patterns, and even a decreased sex drive.
Both of these conditions need to be taken very seriously by both the doctor and the patient. Pain is the body’s alarm system as a way of warning us that something is wrong. When we ignore that alarm we are putting our bodies at risk. Pain can be managed by seeking help with it. Remember that pain is a medical condition that calls for medical treatment.
Currently one of the best medical treatments for pain, especially for people with arthritis, is water therapy or hydrotherapy. Water therapy can consist of swimming, water aerobics, saunas, hot tubs, and a combination of hot and cold water therapy. Water therapy has three main components and all of these will help with the pain due to stiff joints and sore muscles. These components are buoyancy, resistance, and drag and turbulence. Each of these components is necessary for the water therapy to work.
Another modern treatment that is used is not really modern at all. Acupuncture is an old Chinese traditional treatment for pain that the United States has been using as a pain treatment as well. Acupuncture is the process of inserting needles into the body at certain points. It is believed that the process stimulates nerves and aids in the pain. The Chinese believed that it helped to balance a person’s system and allow the pain to subside.
There are many other types of pain relief used in the medical field. Treatments such as deep muscle massage, relaxation techniques, Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and many types of pain medication will all aid in the treatment of the pain that a person is enduring. These methods have shown to work as long as the patient is responding well to the chosen method. A person should always consult with their doctor and decide with him or her what method they will try and when they should change methods.
