Paranormal Activity 2 review expectations may have been low. Although Paranormal Activity 2 review scores wouldn’t stop the movie from getting an audience, reviews for horror sequels have never been too promising. The original movie was frequently compared to The Blair Witch Project, and that film got a panned and largely forgotten sequel the next year. No one would have been surprised if this new franchise suffered the same fate. But as the first reviews for Paranormal Activity 2 come in, there is new promise that this film could buck the trend.
The first movie became a very low budget hit due to its new twist on the haunted house genre. Now, in the sequel, a different couple is being haunted by mysterious supernatural forces, with their home security cameras catching everything.
Paranormal Activity 2 reviews are just starting to come in now. It was obvious that the movie wouldn’t be screened in advance for critics, just like most horror films. However, they were saving the film until its premiere on Wednesday at midnight – the ideal screening time for a film like this.
Although no major critics have sent anything yet, Rotten Tomatoes has collected five early, mostly positive reviews. Four of them are positive, with an average rating of eight. A few of these come from horror movie blogs, but since horror fans have been jaded by so many bad sequels, their raves are more telling.
Dread Central says that this is “a rare sequel that complements and enhances the original,” while Bloody Disgusting states that it lives up to the hype. Only ABC Radio Brisbane has been negative, although their critic admits there are some “jump out of your seat” moments. But he states what could be the main complaint in comments, as he calls it “a simple rehash of the original.”
Even if this movie is just more of the same, enough people loved and screamed at the original to not mind that. According to Entertainment Weekly, the first screening in Manhattan left audiences screaming and crying out at the scary action.
If the rest of the scores are respectable, it will be a big sign that this franchise might have legs. Of course, it won’t matter if other critics aren’t sold, since horror franchises go on and on and on in spite of worse reviews. One of those franchises, Saw, will attempt to knock PA 2 back down with Saw 3D next week.
In the last several years, Saw ruled the horror movie roost on Halloween, but now a new franchise could take over two years in a row. More Paranormal Activity 2 reviews will come in today and tomorrow to signal how strong this new powerhouse still is.
