Paris Hilton appeared in court on Sept. 20 after being charged in August with possession of cocaine and obstructing an officer, according to People.
Hilton dodged jail time by making a plea bargain with the District Attorney that landed her with one year of probation. However, if she finds herself in trouble before the year is over, Hilton will spend a year behind bars in a state prison.
Hilton was arrested on Las Vegas Boulevard after the car which she was riding passenger in was pulled over. The male driver of the car was arrested on DUI charges and Hilton’s purse contained .8 grams of cocaine, according to People.
Hilton was taken to the nearby Wynn Las Vegas hotel, where she was placed in a holding room. Inside the holding room, Hilton grabbed lip balm from her purse, exposing the cocaine baggy to the police officer, according to People.
Hilton told the police officers that the purse containing the cocaine was not hers, but she claimed ownership of the $1,300 cash, credit cards, zig-zag papers (commonly used for marijuana consumption), and half an Albuterol pill.
Following her arrest, Hilton was taken to the Clark County Detention Center for processing.
Along with her probation, Paris Hilton must complete a substance abuse program, pay a $2,000 fine, and complete 200 hours of community service. According to her lawyer, David Chesnoff, Hilton is active in helping out at children hospitals and does work with animal rights.
“I think she’ll continue something along those lines,” he said in a statement to People.
This was the third drug-related incident involving Paris Hilton during this summer; the other two happened outside of the United States.
Hilton was held by police on the French island of Corsica for possession of marijuana, although it was less than a gram. She was released without any charges being pressed. Hilton was also questioned by South African police during the World Cup on the allegation that she had been smoking marijuana. Hilton denied the accusations and was not charged.
Until now, Hilton’s record was clean, save a stint in jail for violating probation in an alcohol-related driving case.
Hilton, shortly after the trial, left on a business trip to the Far East. The trip has been planned for six months, according to People.
She will land in Tokyo, and then travel to Jakarta, Indonesia, where Hilton will be opening a new Paris Hilton clothing store. The trip will end in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia.
Hilton did not want to postpone the trip and will be starting her 200 hours of community service when she arrives back in the United States.
Hilton is also using the Asia trip as a way to unveil her 2010 fall/winter fashion collection, which will include various handbags, watches, and her brand new fragrance called “Tease.”
