Each girl and the individual stories.
Melinda Loveless was born on October 28, 1975, to Larry and Marjorie Loveless. Although her husband returned home a hero after a tour in Vietnam, Marjorie claimed that he often wore underwear and makeup belonging to her and Melinda. His sexual preferences also changed. He insisted Marjorie join others, both men and women, in sex orgies while he watched. He also shared her with his friends.
Due to her husband’s sexual appetites during their marriage, Marjorie tried several times to kill herself. She attempted to stand her ground and refuse to participate, only making things worse. Larry raped her while the children witnessed it. When she continued to deny her husband, he abused her. She had to be hospitalized after one of the beatings.
Larry was also reported to have molested his children and other young girls for years. His abuse included intimidation, beating, and yelling at his family. At some point the family joined a church and seemed to turn a corner. However, Larry began to stray and come on to women at church. He was even accused of a rape attempt.
During this period, thinking their daughter to be possessed, Melinda’s parents subjected her to a five-hour exorcism. In late 1990 Marjorie and Larry divorced and Marjorie became depressed. Larry left for Florida.
Mary Laurie Tackett was born on October 5, 1974, in Madison, Indiana. Her mother was a very religious person; her father was not. Tackett said that she was sexually abused several times as a child. Her mother believed that her daughter should not wear jeans, and attacked Tackett when she was caught donning jeans at school.
Protective Services were contacted, resulting in an agreement to periodic home visits to ensure the attacks did not happen again. At the age of 15 Tackett began to fight back. She developed an interest in the occult, often pretending to be possessed. When a girlfriend exposed Tackett to self-cutting in 1991, she began cutting herself.
When her parents discovered the self-cutting, they had Tackett hospitalized. The doctor prescribed anti-depressive medication and sent her home. Within days Tackett was again cutting herself, this time very deeply. She was returned to the hospital, where she spent time in the psychiatric ward with a diagnosis Borderline Personality Disorder. Soon Tackett stopped attending school. She met Melinda Loveless in late 1991.
Hope Anna Rippey was born in June, 1976, in Madison, Indiana. Following her parents’ divorce in 1984, Rippey, her mother and her siblings lived in Michigan for several years before returning in 1987. Rippey also started self-cutting at the age of 15. Tackett and Lawrence became her good friends.
Toni Lawrence was born in February, 1976. She also suffered abuse as a child, and later raped by a boy when she was just 14. While her rapist suffered no consequence, Lawrence received therapy, but failed to complete the program. As a teenager Lawrence was promiscuous. She joined her friends in self-cutting and suffered suicidal tendencies.
