“It was so fun getting to know you,” Sunny said.
“I wouldn’t trade this summer for the world” Sonny said.
They were that close. Even their names were virtually the same. That summer they had met upon returning home from college after their freshman year, Sunny having went to Texas University in Austin while Sonny went to the University of Louisiana-Baton Rouge. Yet when they came home to Houston and met at the store one day in May, they were inseparable.
“I wish we could have stayed together longer,” Sonny said to her as he opened the door of his apartment to go out.
“Yeah, me too but nothing is meant to last forever,” Sunny said smiling.
The pair was headed out to a sports bar that day to hang out with some of Sunny’s friends as a sort of going away party. School started for both the next week.
They stepped into Sonny’s Nisson and headed to Wild Wings of Buffalo Bar and Grill which was about 15 minutes away.
“Don’t drink yourself stupid–wait, never mind–too late” Sunny giggled.
“Oh I see you have jokes. Well, stupid is as stupid does.”
“What does that even mean?”
“I don’t know, that’s just one of my favorite movie quotes. Right up there with ‘Say hello to my little friend.'”
“You are so funny, that’s what I love about you. I don’t know if I’ll ever find someone who can make me laugh the way you can.”
“Who said you had to Sunny? We’re not going away from each other forever, just for a few months at a time. Plus I’ll come visit you.”
They arrived at Wild Wings and met their friends.
“Hey S[o,u]nny, how are you?” Sunny’s friend Julie said, obviously directing it either one.
“Ha, ha, ha” Sunny said slowly and somewhat sarcastically.
“Hey y’all,” Hermes said as they sat down.
They all sat and discussed numerous topics, from what they did in the summer, at their jobs, music and sports. Finally, the conversation moved toward Sunny and Sonny’s relationship.
“So, how much are you gonna miss each other,” Julie said.
“Oh we were talking about it on the way over here that we’ll miss each other’s sense of humor,” Sunny said.
“Hey, Sunny is my girl, that’s all I know.”
“But how are y’all gonna work it out,” Hermes said.
“Hey you think about your relationship and I’ll worry about mine,” Sunny said.
The mood turned awkward, the pair decided to take off from the restaurant after paying the check shortly thereafter. They then got back into Sonny’s car and headed to Sunny’s parents house so she could be dropped.
“Wow, they sure were nosy, weren’t they,” Sonny said.
“Well, it’s a fair question and those are just my friends, they didn’t mean any harm.”
After Sonny dropped her off, he headed back home. The next day they both began packing to back to school. A few days later, they both were prepared to go back to their schools but not before saying goodbye to one another.
“I’m gonna miss you,” Sunny said.
“Yeah, me too. Call me when you get there to let me know you made it home safe.”
“Okay,” she said.
The two both arrived back on their respective campus’ safely and both began to get settled in at school. But they settled in with more than they realized.
A few weeks after the beginning of school they talked on the phone once again.
“Hey, I wanted to be honest with you,” Sonny stated early in a phone conversation. “I met this really nice girl at the football game named Autumn. We chatted it up, liked each other and had a real fun time. She also was into the same things as me, like Scarface and what not. We’ve hung out a few times since then”
“So what are you saying?” Sunny said
“I’m saying that I kinda like her, even though I’m trying to figure out if it’s as a friend or as something more.”
“Oh…” Sunny said with a loss for words. “I met someone as well–he’s pretty funny. Not as much as you but pretty funny. His name is Seth.”
“But the thing is, I still wanna be with you” Sonny said. “We had so much fun this summer that I don’t want to let that go.”
“True Sonny, we did but I’m starting to think my friends may have been right. I certainly loved being with you and you make me laugh but we’re in different states, hundreds of miles away. I mean I look forward to you coming out to see me in a couple weeks but we can’t be around each other all the time.”
“So do you think I’d be best if we just took some time off?” he said.
“Yeah because you never know who you may lose trying to hold on to someone that you can’t be with in the present. Besides, it’s not as if we aren’t gonna see each other again. Let’s just take some time off.”
He agreed and the two looked into being in a relationship with the person each had met the next day on September 22.
