My husband and I generally have Tums and Mylanta chewable tablets on hand for the occasional bouts of indigestion or heartburn, but since I am visiting my daughter for two months, I am at the mercy of what they happen to have in their medicine cabinet.
Last night after dinner I was not feeling well. I had really bad indigestion that went straight through to my back. I asked them if they had any Tums and my daughter directed me to their medicine chest, which contained only a bottle of Pepcid Complete Dual Action Berry Flavor Chewable Tablets. Since it was the only medication at my disposal, I took one and hoped for the best.
Pepcid Complete Dual Action Berry Flavor Chewable Tablets come in a plastic container that bouts the words “New Look!”. It pictures a chewable tablet sitting next to a raspberry and blackberry. The container states that just one tablet relieves heartburn due to acid indigestion. The container has 50 berry flavored chewable tablets that measure about 3/4″ in diameter and are a raspberry color.
The active ingredient in Pepcid Complete Dual Action Berry Flavor Chewable Tablets is 10 mg of famotidine, which is an acid reducer, 800 mg of calcium carbonate, and 165 mg of magnesium hydroxide – the latter two ingredients are antacids.
The directions state that adults and children 12 years of age and older can completely chew one tablet, and that you should not take more than two chewable tablets in a 24 hour period. There is a portion of the label that pulls back from the container, and it has a lot of additional information for the consumer. I like the tips that they give for managing heartburn, such as trying not to lay flat or bend over after eating, not to wear clothes that fit tightly over the stomach area, not to eat right before retiring to bed, and that you might get relief from heartburn by raising the head of your bed slightly.
Other tips are to watch what you eat and avoid spicy and fatty foods, as well as avoiding caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, and other foods. Quitting the smoking habit is also a recommendation. I have suffered from GERD and acid reflux for years, and I don’t remember seeing helpful tips like this on a medication bottle that can be purchased over the counter! Kudos to Johnson & Johnson and Merck !
The good news is that within thirty minutes of taking a Pepcid Complete Dual Action Berry Flavor Chewable Tablet, my symptoms had diminished significantly. I was able to rest comfortably in bed and get a good nights sleep. These antacids and acid reducing chewable tablets really work! I highly recommend them to all those who suffer from acid indigestion, and they are pretty tasty too!
