I was invited to a very special press event for Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief at the posh and elegant Stoneleigh Hotel in Dallas, TX on January 18th. First, we got to see 20 minutes of clips from the film. I’m not talking filler parts or unfinished scenes, either. We’re talking very important and pivotal parts of the film that showcased the special effects and action. To put it bluntly, the movie looks great. I was especially impressed with the scenes using digital water. The water actually looked real, which is very hard to do (see both The Mummy movies). After the screening, we were ushered into a lounge area, where we got to have a sit-down chat with the cast. It was very cool, as I was only paired with one other media outlet, instead of the usual five or six people sitting at a table firing questions at the actors.
Here’s the video clips of the interview we did. Seated left to right in the clips are Jake Abel (Luke), Alexandra Daddario (Annabeth), Brandon T. Jackson (Grover), and Logan Lerman (Percy). We discussed comparisons between Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, working with Chris Columbus, the physicality of the film and training, Alexandra’s love of acupuncture and the guys’ collected hatred of it, researching Greek mythology for their parts, Brandon’s ad libbing in the film, working with special effects and using their imaginations, encouraging kids to use their imagination, comparing the film and the novel for the fans, and who read the book before filming. It had to be split into two videos because of the length.
