Peasant hunting is very popular with sportsmen around the United States. Even though the pheasant is not native to this country it has gained a strong foothold in many regions. The pheasants beautiful colors and excellent tasting meat are what make it popular with hunters, whether it be for the table or forgetting a beautiful taxidermy mount.
The pheasant is a very wily bird and he can be very hard to hunt at times. Although there are people who go out and kill the pheasants without using dogs, the people who want with well-trained dogs have much greater success.
When it comes to pheasant hunting with dogs, there are two different strategies. The first is hunting with a flushing breed. The Flushing breeds include the spaniels, labs (although some labs do point most are flushers) and some other mixed breeds. Then there are those who prefer to hunt over a pointing dog. Pointing dogs would be pointers, setters, German short haired and wire haired pointers. Along with many other breeds of pointers including the Brittany spaniel.
Even though the pheasants is a bird and is a strong flyer it would often times rather run to escape from predators than to fly. This is what often times presents a problem for hunters. If you are hunting with a pointing dog often times after the dog locates a bird and is on point the bird will run from under its nose. When this happens the pointer will then keep tracking the pheasant until it is able to get it pinned down until a hunter can arrive and flush it. Or else the pheasant will keep running fillets out of range and then fly.
This can also be a problem with the Flushing breeds, even though they flush the bird if it starts running it can often be out of gun range before the dog is able to chase into the air.
One way to get these running birds is to have hunters positioned at the end of the field you are hunting. This will generally stop the birds, and make them fly to either the blockers or the walkers so they can get a shot at them. Often times a hunter will run to try to keep up with a dog that is on a running bird. I would not recommend this because it is not very safe to run with a loaded firearm
