Is it really true when they say ‘only the good die young’? The millionaire owner of the British company that produces segway transportation machines perished yesterday at the age of 62. Jimi Heselden was riding one of the newer rugged models around his estate and seemingly lost control over a cliff and fell into a river.
The world has a lost a very charitable man. In 2008, he created the Leeds Community Foundation, to which he has donated millions of dollars. The organization works to aid disadvantaged youth, vulnerable elders, and health improvement projects (dailymail). This isn’t the only charity that he has been generous with. He has helped military causes, as well, with his contributions to Help for Heroes.
But, that should come as no surprise, given the nature of how he became so successful. Heselden founded the defense company Hesco Bastion a few decades ago. The company produces steel-mesh baskets used by soldiers during battle on the frontlines. The concept replaced the use of sandbags as protection.
Heselden had only recently purchased Segway, Inc. Segways are becoming more popularized around the world. They have been seen on city streets, used by police officers to patrol the area. They are available to ride at Disney theme parks on a behind-the-scenes tour. The Adventure model even allows riders to go off-road.
It is with great sadness that such a philanthropic man is gone. The world needs people like him who have the heart and resources to do great things for others. Hesco Bastion was working on new ventures, like an innovative shelter that could house up to 8 people in the aftermath of a disaster (dailymail). Hopefully, Heselden’s purpose will be continued long after his death.
