Fall is the perfect time to go to an apple orchard in your local area and pick fresh ripe apples. We recently went to an apple orchard in Conway Springs, Kansas approximately 30miles southwest of Wichita, Kansas.
The orchard we visited in Conway Springs, KS is called Steffan’s Orchard. It is located at 1345 W 90th Ave N, Conway Springs, Ks 67031. Their phone number is 620-456-2706.
This apple orchard is run by a local family and is not a big commercial orchard. You are greeted by friendly people that treat you like family and show you where to go to get the apples that are in season. They have over 20 acres of apples trees!!
Anything you want to know about apples, they can answer for you! They were full of knowledge and happy to answer all our questions.
When we went the apples were 69 cents a pound! That is cheaper than you can buy in the grocery stores! And fresh home grown apples always taste better than store bought commercial apples. They are sweeter, juicier and crisper. Once you taste the difference from commercial apples to fresh apples, you will make the orchard a regular shopping stop for your apples.
Kids also love to pick apples! My 4 year old thought it was really cool to get to choose her very own apples right off the tree! My friends’ 6 year old was having so much fun he filled her box and also helped my daughter pick some for our box! It is a great experience for your kids, especially if you live in the city and don’t get to experience stuff like that very often.
They also have handouts for free that you can grab on how to make different recipes with the apples. They can tell you what apples are best for which recipe, such as apple pie, apple butter, and apple crisp. They do have a recipe for apple crisp on their handouts, but they also know a few different recipes for apple crisp and will gladly share their home recipes with you.
Apples are in season from late August through October. If you are looking for a specific variety of apple you will need to call them ahead of time to find out the ripening dates for that type of apple. From mid-September through October they also offer fresh apple cider!
If you are looking for peaches, they also have peaches earlier in the year. 60 acres worth of peaches from July through August that you can pick right of the trees!
