As marathon runners recover from their 27 mile run, fans and spectators should turn their attention to another marathon that is coming up. Or rather, Pieathon. Nina Callaway will be baking pies for 24 hours straight to raise money for CancerCare, a nonprofit organization that provides professional support for those suffering from the disease.
Nina Callaway has lost both her parents to cancer, so she knows just how devastating the disease is. She’s chosen to celebrate their lives in a sweet way and in the process has spread their memory across the city along with the delicious pies she sells during her event. Her father was still around during the first Pieathon and loved the idea, and would surely be proud his daughter is now baking for him as well.
New York residents can buy pies from Callaway, which can then be picked up after the marathon baking session just in time for Thanksgiving. Those who don’t eat sweets or who live out of town can still donate however, either directly to CancerCare or to Callaway, who makes sure 100% of the proceeds make their way to the charity organization. And those out of towners will have their chance to taste the pies as well, though they won’t be baked by Callaway. Anyone who pledges at least $24 will get one of the pie recipes and she will give away all five recipes to anyone who pledges $100. The pies are vegetarian but not vegan, and are not safe for those with a nut allergy. All others should dig in.
