So, you’ve packed up a box of books to give away and you are not sure what to do with them. San Jose has numerous organizations that are always looking for donated books. Check out these different causes and find the one that is the best match for you and your books.
Books for Treats
This organization promotes giving kids books instead of candy on Halloween. They participate in a book giveaway in Willow Glen around Halloween every year. Books for Treats is always looking for more gently used children’s books and donations can be made at the Comerica Bank branch in Willow Glen, any of the Technology Credit Union branches, and at Cucina Bambini in Willow Glen. Donations of 200 or more children’s books require special drop off or pick arrangements. Call the founder and Executive Director, Rebecca Morgan at (408) 998-7977 to schedule your donation.
Reading is Cool
The Sharks Foundation
525 West Santa Clara Street
San Jose, CA 95113
The Shark Foundation has a literacy program called Reading is Cool that is available to elementary schools throughout the area. Part of the program involves a school visit by Sharkie every month to classrooms in each grade level that read the most pages. During this visit, Sharkie will donate a bag of books to the classroom or school library. The Shark Foundation is in need of new or like new children’s books to help with this part of the program. There will be book drives at the San Jose Sharks home games on October 27 and 30. Bring a book to the game and you will receive a raffle ticket for drawing to be held that night.
The Mercury News Gift of Reading
1355 Ridder Park Drive
San Jose, CA 95131
During the pre-Christmas shopping rush, the Mercury News partners with Resource Area For Teaching (RAFT) to host an annual book collection drive for new or like new books for underprivileged children. The specifically look for children’s books appropriate for preschoolers through elementary school-age. Spanish and Vietnamese books are also much appreciated. Check online for an updated list of drop-off locations.
Friends of the San Jose Public Libraries
Various branch locations throughout San Jose
The Friends of the Library accept gently used books that are not outdated. Your “To Kill a Mockingbird” will be a welcomed donation, but leave the 1980’s computer book out for recycling. Donated books are sold at Friends of the Library book sales through out the year. The proceeds from the book sales go back to the libraries for programs and new books.
The Gift of Literacy
At Santa Clara County Reading Council events
The Santa Clara County Reading Council (SCCRC) was established to promote literacy for all people in this valley. As part of this mission, they have started collecting children’s books at all of their events. The books are then distributed to students in need. They collected over 1,000 books last year and are hoping for more this year. SCCRC has several events throughout the year and there will be a red and blue collection bin for donated books at each event.
