My daughter has a screened-in porch. We spend a lot of time out there for most of the year. A non-fan of silk plants, she prefers to use real ones. Unfortunately, those can present a problem if she isn’t conscientious in watering.
Last year I bought her some glass watering bulbs that she could insert in her plants for constant watering. She loved them but needed more than the two I purchased for $19.99.
This year, I noted that Dollar Tree carried a miniature version of the bulbs, which they call Plant Genie Minis. They were about one-third the size of the original hand-blown glass bulbs. However, than made them the perfect size for many of my daughter’s smaller plants.
I wondered if, at just $1, Plant Genie Minis could possibly work as well as the original products that retailed for nearly twenty times more. Let’s take a look and see.
Claim #1 says that Plant Genie Minis provide an automatic watering system for plants. That is true. If the instructions are followed to the letter, Plant Genie Minis work well. That means you spend less time watering and more time enjoying your plants.
Obviously, they don’t hold as much water as the larger sized bulbs, but they aren’t meant too. They are meant to hydrate small plants that couldn’t handle the amount of water provided by it larger competitor. They get 5 stars for this claim.
Claim #2 states the product is easy to use. That is accurate too. All you have to do is fill the Plant Genie with cold water up to the top of the bulb line. Next make a deep hole in the dirt of the plant where the product will be used. Make certain you insert Plant Genie right next the plant’s stem. Turn Plant Genie upside down and insert the long neck into the hole. That’s all there is to it. It couldn’t get much easier. That earns this claim another 5 stars.
Claim #3 says Plant Genie works in any plant, planter or hanging basket. That is partially true. If you decide to use the product in a larger size plant, it will be necessary to refill Plant Genie more often than necessary with smaller plants. In truth, larger plant watering bulbs work better for those purposes. Therefore, Plant Genie earns only 4 stars for this claim.
Claim #4 states you can use Plant Genie anywhere; on your patio, screened-in porch, Florida room or home. That is true. The product works well both indoors and out. However, during the heat of summer, it will be necessary to fill Plant Genie more often. Therefore this claim earns 4 stars.
Claim #5 says you can use Plant Genie in any soil. While that is true, it will work best when the soil of the plant is already moist. First of all, hard soil could easily break the neck of the product during the insertion procedure. Secondly, since Plant Genie only releases a small amount of water at a time, soil that is already too dry will be difficult to hydrate and could result in plant damage. This claim receives only 2 stars.
Plant Genie’s size ‘” 6″ ‘” might give one pause to wonder if the tiny hand blown glass ball could possibly work. It does by creating a vacuum between itself and the soil where it is inserted. While it may not hold the large amount of water that its predecessor does, it still provides hours or even days of hands free watering. That saves the owner both time and money.
With five claims earning 20 stars, that averages out to 4 stars which equates to a good, solid rating. At $1 a pop, Plant Genie Minis are a real bargain. I highly recommend them!
