My doctor told me that almonds make a good snack if I am trying to rebuild bone, and for the past eight months I have been snacking on a variety of almonds. Because I don’t like the high sodium content in salted nuts I have been buying natural almonds with no added salt.
However, the last bag of almonds I purchased was Planters 100% Natural Harvest California Almonds. These come in an eleven ounce bag, with the bottom half clear so the contents are easily visible. These are roasted in sea salt and contain no added oils, no preservatives, and no artificial ingredients.
When I was looking at the other types of almonds, the salted varieties really looked appealing to me, especially the smoked almonds. The downfall was that they were literally covered with tons of salt! The Planters 100% Natural Harvest California Almonds don’t even look like they have salt on them.
The ingredients in this food are simple, almonds and sea salt. Period. Nothing else! One serving size is about 25 almonds, which contain 160 calories and 14 grams of fat. There is only 1 gram of saturated fat, and zero of the bad trans fats. There are zero milligrams of cholesterol, 95 milligrams of sodium, 210 milligrams of potassium, 6 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of dietary fiber, 1 gram of sugars, and 6 grams of protein.
The taste of these Planters 100% Natural Harvest California Almonds are delicious. There are no broken pieces, the almonds are extremely fresh and crunchy, and they are lightly coated with a super fine sea salt. Now, sea salt contains the same amount of sodium as table salt, and since adults only need between 1,500 and 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day, this is a snack that should be eaten in moderation.
Sea salt comes from sea water, and table salt is mined from rock salt which comes from mineral deposits. Choosing one over the other is simply a choice of taste and preference. I personally like the fine texture of salt on these almonds, and when I compared the sodium content to other brands of almonds that contained regular table salt, this Planters brand did contain less sodium.
Although this is not a snack I would want to eat by the hand fulls, it is a very tasty and satisfying food to snack on between meals, or if I need a quick protein pick me up. The bag retailed for $7.40 at my local Target store.
