Earlier this month PopCap released their hit tower defense game Plants vs. Zombies on Xbox Live Arcade. This marks the developers fourth time releasing this hit game and the third time released overall this year. Most games can’t even sell well when they are released once, yet this game continues to make money each time it’s released.
It was first released on PC back in May of 2009. It was first released this year back in February on the iPhone and the second time was just a few weeks ago in August as a Game of the Year edition for the PC. There is also a Nintendo DS version of the game that is scheduled for release in early 2011 and you shouldn’t be surprised if they announce a version for the PlayStation Network. That would make it six different times that PopCap has sold costumers basically the same game. Is this a sign of a really good game or a developer that is milking a game?
In my opinion this is PopCap making their amazing game accessible to a larger audience that it probably would have never reached if the game had only stayed on the PC. Even though this is basically the same, people are still buying this game because it’s just that good no matter which version you’re playing.
I wouldn’t call what PopCap is doing with this game “milking” because each time PopCop has given you some reason to want to buy this game over and over again. The iPhone version removes some of the features of the game but it allows you to have that core experience on the go. With the new version on XBL the biggest additions PopCap has added to the game that will convince people to buy this game again is Co-Op and competitive game play. Players can finally enjoy this game with others
I’m one of those people that have bought Plants vs. Zombies several times. PopCap has created an amazing game that anyone can and should play. I would not mind if more developers could create games that are so good and addictive that you would buy it more than once.
